How FP&A teams can start using AI without replatforming

A practical look at where AI can help FP&A teams first, without pretending a full finance stack replacement is required.

For most FP&A teams, the first AI wins do not come from replacing every planning system. They come from removing repetitive work around the systems you already use.

Common starting points include summarizing variance commentary, drafting recurring reporting narratives, cleaning operating inputs, and speeding up scenario analysis preparation. Those are narrow workflows with clear owners, known data sources, and obvious success criteria.

That matters because finance teams need trust before they scale automation. A lightweight pilot is easier to evaluate than a broad transformation program with unclear accountability.

In practice, the best first step is to pick one recurring workflow that is manual, frequent, and annoying. Document the current process, define what a good output looks like, and measure time saved or cycle-time reduction. If the workflow holds up under review, expand from there.

The goal is not to sound innovative. The goal is to give the team back time while preserving control, auditability, and judgment.
